The story related by Tom HUGHES is that he didn't make a very good fist of running the White Hart, however, this hasn't been backed up with any evidence.

91 Bailgate. White Hart Hotel The present building originates from 1722, but is a composite of several buildings. It was refronted in 1844 with additions and alterations in the 1880s/1890s, 1938 and 1962. There was an inn here "le hert" in 1515 and perhaps as far back as the 14th century.
