Note

Edward has been entered as the son of Thomas Hughes [180] & Hannah [181]. The evidence to support this is:-

1) From his age at burial Edward was born c.1755 but he was definitely not baptised in Gainsborough. The baptism of Joseph Hughes [182] on 2 August 1760, son of the above Thomas & Hannah, is the first parish register entry for a Hughes in Gainsborough (apart from one stray entry in 1746). Prior to this there appear to have been no Hughes's in Gainsborough. If Edward is a son of Thomas & Hannah and an elder brother of Joseph then it follows that the Hughes family must have moved to Gainsborough some time between 1755 & 1760.

2) The frequent use of Thomas & Hannah as forenames from Edward's generation onwards.

3) The fact that Edward and Thomas were both Tobacco Cutters.

There is one baptism of an Edward Hughes, son of a Thomas & Hannah, c.1755 in the IGI:- Edward Hughs, son of Thomas & Hannah Hughs, baptised 31 March 1755 in Dudley, WOR.
